Fair
Deal for UK Farmers
Award winners Waitrose was nominated by dairy farmer Andrew Hemmings, who presented the supermarket with the award on 13 December 2007. Andrew's main reason for nominating Waitrose was the fair price they give for his milk and their pushing other supermarkets to improve their prices too. Milk prices have been so low that the number of dairy farmers has halved in the last decade. The local media were present and the topic was covered by the Birmingham Mail, Solihull Times, Solihull News and the Stirrer, an on-line regional newspaper. Click here for the press release. On February 21 2008, a second award was given to the general
public by Fordhall Farm. This community owned farm nominated the people
who come to their farm shop, as they sustain the farm's income. Click here for the press release. The third to receive a Fair Deal Award was Rugby Farmers Market LLP, who have taken over trade from the recently closed Rugby Cattle Market. The award was presented at the Royal Show early July, which was held at the same location as the Rugby Market. Click here for the press release. The fourth and last award was given to Capers, a delicatessen in Pershore and a "truly local retailer", on Thursday the 25th of September. The shop was nominated by local food business Plantation Cottage Herbs. Lynda Whitcombe of Plantation Cottage Herbs feels Capers are a truly local retailer and enjoys the personal relationship she has with them. Helen celebrated the nomination by setting up a local food festival showcasing her local food heroes. Click here for the press release.
